“I write because I enjoy it, it’s as simple as that,” states Laura Hou, continuing, “I started writing fiction for fun when I was thirteen years old.” This seasoned writer uses writing as a medium to explore the fictitious, and to escape reality. “I write whatever makes me happy, when I’m stressed or upset, writing makes me forget the problems I’m experiencing.” Laura relishes the magic of letters and words and stringing them into a complete being, going on to say that when it comes to writing, she answers to no-one but herself. Laura’s preferred genre happens to be fantasy, as it opens up so many possibilities for an author. Her favourite author is Sarah J Maas (author of books such as the Throne of Glass series) stating that “she is the writer that inspired me to write, as the worlds that she creates are so magical.”
Laura keeps her eyes open for any opportunity to learn, saying that, “The only way for your writing to be interesting is for you to broaden your knowledge. And also keep your senses wide open, take in as much information as you can, anything and everything is an inspiration, you just have to know how to see it. If we do not imagine, the unimaginable will never find us.” As such, Laura also loves to incorporate themes like the conflicting sides of humanity into her works, using examples like ‘Good v. Evil’, ‘Jealousy v. Generosity’, and ‘Kindness v. Hostility’. She enjoys the contrasting stances they take and finds irony in that “the things that define us as ‘evil’ are also things that make us human. But we all have a choice as to what we do, we can choose to be kind to each other, or be mean. In the end, the demons that we face are ultimately our own.” Perceptive as she is, Laura continues to find clever ways to incorporate these ideals into her literature.
“My favourite classic writer is Shakespeare. Out of all of his works, I especially enjoyed Winter’s Tale.” To her, it’s “just one of those classic works that stays with you even after you turn the last page and close the book.” She also enjoys reading mystery novels, but Laura emphasized that her favourite is still strictly fantasy: “It is a way for me to live the life of a fictional character and explore worlds that will never exist.” Laura is currently working hard on a novel and she can envision what the near future of her novel looks like. The genre is fantasy, and it is about angels who are mistakenly blamed and punished for a crime they are innocent of. “I hope to finish the book this year,” Laura states.
Since she was ten-years-old, Laura Hou has been aspiring to be a writer. She definitely wants to pursue a career regarding use of her literary skills. “I want to study English literature and creative writing in university and hopefully publish a fantasy novel in the future.”
