Winnie Guo is a senior Collingwood artist who paints spectacular pieces of art. Her hometown is Qingdao, China, and she moved to Vancouver in the sixth grade, coming to Collingwood in grade eight. While not painting, she enjoys writing, playing tennis, as well as playing the piano. Art is something that Winnie has been involved in since the age of six, when her mother first introduced painting and drawing to her. Since then, her interest has only expanded, and with the help of her mother, she found great studios and art teachers that supported her as a painter and allowed her to grow. Winnie sees past art as merely a school subject, but also as a way of life. It influences every aspect of her life, giving her freedom, peace and tranquility whenever she picks up another brush. She draws inspiration from everyday life; her own feelings and stories, the world around her, and even simple things like the feeling of wind on her own face.

Her favourite mediums to use are oil based paints, watercolor paints, and charcoal, as seen in her paintings. These materials allow Winnie to easily depict smoothness in her paintings, which helps when painting abstracts. Abstract paintings, along with surrealist, and conceptual art are her go-to styles when painting. To her, these mediums, especially abstract styles, are her favourite as they ‘convey a very distorted and mysterious feeling’, breaking away from the confines of traditional realism. In her own artwork, she looks to fuse her characteristics with her creations. Conventional art projects are one such example of infusing her own style; Winnie enjoys making more ‘traditional’ projects into abstract ones by creating twists such as with different or even strange objects and materials.
After graduating high school this very June, Winnie plans to attend Cornell University for its Fine Arts program. She plans on working in the fashion industry or advertisement. Arts Mag wishes Winnie luck on all her future endeavors!
