Stella Guernsey has been at Collingwood school since Kindergarten, making this remarkable artist a lifer. She has two stepbrothers who also used to be passionate about theatre and acting in high school. Acting runs in the family because her mother is an actress. Stella grew up watching her go to auditions daily, which inspired her to go into the world of film. Her inspiration taught her that you may not always get the part, but fate will guide you in the right way, so never be discouraged. The main type of art Stella enjoys is anything that has to do with a camera and real-life performance, film, photography and acting. Filmmaking is, however, her passion because she loves that she can use her personal experiences or societal issues and make them into a visual to get the point across. At school, Stella plays basketball and has been going strong for 8 years. She has fallen in love with the sport that she decided to make a documentary about it. This project is a collection of important basketball moments that her team has been through throughout the highschool years, we can’t wait for the release of it! Stella is immersed in arts because at school she enjoys filmmaking class, and at home, she writes songs, plays the ukulele and sings!

When asked about inspiration, Stella looks up to Quentin Tarintino because he has created any famous and visually appealing movies in Hollywood. He has demonstrated and inspired people with weird shots, angles and storyline that makes a movie even more enjoyable. Stella states that if she could meet Tarintino, she would ask “when and how did you know you wanted to be a director?”
Stella is enjoying this year’s film class the most because she can learn and improve on her passion. It has further developed her skills. Participating in school plays such as “Witness for the Prosecution” and “The Crucible” is also very enjoyable for Stella because she can put on a character and make friends while doing it. Her favourite part of art is the freedom she has while directing her film projects. Even the small projects get her very excited, whenever there is a spark of inspiration; Stella is ready to pursue it. When she is on stage, she is confident, strong and in her happy place. Acting fits her personality because she is such a dramatic person, that’s why it comes so naturally. If she were to choose a part to act, it would be the villain in a scene. She finds it easier to play someone with a mean attitude because it is far more dramatic and exciting to play.
Growing up, young Stella has a passion to make videos. From blurry video star music videos on her iPod touch to advancing to professional films that are posted online, these are all her prized possessions. They represent a different part of her life. To Stella, her art is the backbone of her life. It has made her more confident, and she keeps all of it as memories for the future.
Art comes in many shapes, ways and forms. From Stella’s perspective, “art is an expression of one’s personality and feelings. It is easy to create something sad when you are feeling sad, but the way that you do create a piece reflects your personality.” Art is how she gets thought life because it is always consistent. She will never fall out of love with it and will continue to develop it every day. The smallest things about filmmaking and acting bring her the most immense joy, like a cold glass of milk. Whether she is finding the perfect song, editing, or finding the ideal location to film, it will always make her happy. Even when she is feeling sad, she is still always thinking about the next big project. “When I am sad, I listen to sad songs and can visualize a sequence of shots that would work perfectly with each beat. It is what I love most in my life.”
In the future, Stella wants to become a movie director in Hollywood. She wants to amaze, move and interest people from her creations. If Stella doesn’t follow this path, she will continue to enjoy her passion. Having a logical outlook on things can be boring, but a creative one opens new opportunities and ideas for every situation. She is planning many projects currently, so stay tuned for more exciting films to come. This talented artist has a long road ahead of her, with the passion she holds we can’t wait for more. “I’ve always wanted life to be like a movie, so I made mine into one.”- Stella Guernsey
